"I am made up of everything I have seen", said Matisse at the end of his life, and this beautiful turn of phrase describes the way Irene Peña goes about crafting a picture. Through her untamed images runs a deep river of knowing and seeing, of filling up her mind with dresses, light and shadow, movement and haze. The photographer’s craft reaches back in time from the precise moment an idea came to be, sometimes in collaboration with a designer or an artist. Irene takes that idea and develops it with the trained eye of an editor: backgrounds, locations, lighting, models, colors, and poses begin to fall into place. There is always a pleasure in rediscovering her images once the shoot is over; in this new calm she continues her work of acutely observing, every little square a possibility of beauty.
Born in Costa Rica, Irene began studying painting and graphic design, which morphed into a career in photography. She studied at Santa Monica College, in California, and after a stint as an advertising photographer, she turned to the world of fashion photography in Los Angeles. Right now, Irene is based in Costa Rica, where she continues her innovative work, using analog and digital cameras, with established designers and new Costa Rican talent.

I worked first as a photographer for the Quebec Press Agency, taking sports, concerts, and paparazzi work. And then, I moved to the portrait industry in 2016. Through my spontaneous and provocative approach, I have, ever since, been creating an impact on the fashion scene; and It’s just the beginning. Over this short career start, I’ve worked with many fashion brands and provided them with images of the highest quality. While my collaborative work has been praised by renowned local influencers like Angela Caloisi, Virginia Stablum, Adamo, Karine Saint-Michel et Marie Gagné, my personal work has been featured in international magazines such as GMARO Italia, Vanity Teens LA, and many more. My bold yet playful images appear on the influencer’s blog, editorial magazine, major events, and shows.
My raw unrestrained images got me noticed, but reliability, professionalism, a positive mind-set, and my knowledge in advertisement marketing brought me to where I am today.
Fascinated with creating a narrative with light, composition, and texture.

I have always had a vivid imagination and restless spirit. Growing up, I resisted routine. I dreamt in moving and still images. I imagined the light that burns inside people shining outward, giving colour to space and objects, spreading like long fingers over my community to move life like a musician makes music. The things I imagined told the story of my life and all its contradictions; more than anything, I wanted to capture that life. Soon, I discovered photography and the means of capturing it was in my hands. The beauty in the everyday existence of ordinary people that I once imagined became the subject of my art, through which I capture images focusing on the human face and its unique ability to convey a person’s spirit. There is nothing else like it. My photographs are thus inspired by the ineffable and under-appreciated quality of the human face as unlike anything else in existence. It is, on one level, as profane as any body part, made of flesh and common enough among people; and yet our faces are unmatched in their abilities to reveal, if even fleetingly, something divine. Through portraiture – indeed, the photographic study of the face – my work emphasizes that which reveals us and conceals us, defines and perplexes us, moves and stupefies us, eludes and demands knowing. My portraits depict the intersectionality of the human face as a liminal subject joining the sacred and profane.

Will Crooks here. I am a transplant to the South via that Midwest who has been here long enough to call it home. The process of making a portrait whether it is a snapshot of my friends and family or an editorial assignment at my studio is endlessly fascinating to me. The mix of technical skill, empathy, and focus needed to create an iconic yet nuanced portrait keeps me making images every single day.
The last four years I worked as the Visual Director at the Community Journals before launching my own photography business. I spent my days photographing editorial content and providing art direction for various publications under Community Journals brand.
These days I find myself creating narrative driven photographs for editorial and commercial clients. Coming from a background in publications I make images that speak to the deeper story each brand is telling with their product or service.
