Portfolio Events

One Wonderful Machine portfolio event in New York City coming right up! Wonderful Machine photographer portfolios and promos, music (The Grateful Dead), GPS, snacks, rain coats, umbrellas, reserved parking, and meetings scheduled with AnalogFolk, FCB Health, and Language Dept. – Check! Here we go...

In an effort to meet face-to-face more often with clients we have started to schedule our portfolio events on an ongoing basis. Getting our photographers’ books in the hands of clients is a much more personal touch and allows us to reaffirm our position as a go-to resource for quality photographers. Julia and I met at Wonderful Machine HQ early on Wednesday, April 26th to head up to New York City. It had poured the whole night before and the forecast wasn’t looking great, but the rain was holding off and we were truckin’ on up to the Chelsea District.

Parked and the weather still playing nice, we had time to stop for a coffee and check emails before our first meeting with the team at AnalogFolk: a small creative agency that focuses mostly on digital content. Their clients include Nike, Guess, and Clif Bar & Co, so naturally, they were drawn to Jayms Ramirez’s portfolio. His Sports & Fitness, Lifestyle, and Adventure work was a one stop shop for Nike, Guess, and Clif Bar. Check out Jayms' portfolio below:

We got to talk to Producer Justin Sunga a little bit more about their process and we learned that AnalogFolk regularly hires out for their productions. Wonderful Machine’s ability to produce a shoot and recommend photographers for a specific project kept the one stop shopping going for AnalogFolk.

With a little bit of time before our next meeting, we were able to grab a sandwich, and Madison Square Garden provided some relief from the elements. FCB Health was a short walk from MSG, and their office was as impressive as their work.

Erica Turner set us up with their team of creatives and we got to chat and review some books. Healthcare can be portrayed in a variety of different ways, so it was no surprise that Lauryn Ishak’s clean style and versatility drew a lot of attention to her book at the review. We are hoping to be back at FCB Health soon for a meeting with art buyers and producers too.

Our final stop on the trip brought us to the small design agency, Language Dept. But first, a caffeine boost across the street in the form of a blonde roast and a flat white with coconut milk. Recharged, we met with Tanya Quick and her knowledgeable team of designers. They are currently working on a project for a cosmetic company and wanted to see work that included liquids, smears, vials, and bottles.

Our last portfolio showing at Language Dept.

The Language Dept. team was really drawn to Monica Stevenson’s work and specifically asked to see Jeffery Westbrook’s portfolio. Melinda DiMauro’s beauty work also garnered some attention, but Tanya’s team was curious to see any cosmetic still life work that Melinda may have shot. I reached out to Melinda and she did have some product work that was not on her site or in her portfolio. She was able to put together a small digital portfolio and we sent that over to the team at Language Dept.

We created new relationships with three different agencies, left impressions on dozens of creatives, and the rain managed to hold off for most of the day. Win, win, and win. After the Lincoln Tunnel, New Jersey Turnpike, and the Delaware River Bridge the sun even decided to come out. If you are a Wonderful Machine photographer and would like to send in your portfolio to be taken out on our portfolio events, please contact me.
