Nashville-based photographer Robby Klein says, “music has always played a role in my life.” The fact that he plays music himself, for over a decade, has helped fuel his desire to photograph musicians. It also helps that many musical artists have unique, “larger than life” looks that make striking stills.
Robby’s talent in capturing musicians’ attitude and style caught the eye of Billboard Magazine six months ago. Since then, he’s shot roughly a dozen assignments for them, with his latest being with the country music group, The Band Perry.
For this shoot, Robby was charged with capturing The Band Perry in three distinct set ups, with each look capturing a different emotion. After some brainstorming, Robby decided on a painterly/classic look for the first, a proud/serious look for the second, and a lighthearted/silly final one. He and his team spent almost five hours preparing the studio — a lot of that time used on pre-lighting the sets. Robby was pumped to use a Mole-Richardson, a stage/film lighting instrument. “That warm, constant light was just so dreamy to work with,” Robby says.
The band was exceptional to work with. I’m not one to gush too much, but the band and their team were some of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I could go on and on about their willingness, cooperation and positive attitudes. Just great people.
Billboard loved the resulting images and used one on their latest cover. The band and their label, Big Machine, also reached out to Robby letting him know just how much they enjoyed the photos — almost as much as Robby enjoyed making them.
