In an unprecedented move, PDN’s September issue (available on newsstands today) features exclusively female photographers from cover to cover. As always, it was a pleasure to browse through a photo publication filled with inspiring imagery, but it was especially refreshing to see the quality (and quantity!) of work coming from female photographers in this month’s PDN issue.
PDN’s Editor-in-Chief Holly Hughes sums up their reasoning for featuring all women in this month’s Letter from the Editor:
Women photographers have to contend with lingering stereotypes about what women can or can’t excel at. By filling every section of this issue with images and insights by women photographers, we hope to emphasize the breadth of talent, expertise and experience of women photographers working in every genre and style.
Cheers to that, Holly! I completely agree that women in photography have the added pressure of dealing with stereotypes about what females are capable of in the industry. Before starting my career as a publicist, I earned a degree in photojournalism from Penn State. Even in my four short years there, I saw females gaining more traction in photography than when I first started my studies. More often than not, the people I competed against in competitions were female, I was in clubs and on photo staffs that had female leadership, and many of the photographers that I looked up to and learned from were strong female photojournalists. In my years after graduation, I’ve happily watched many talented, driven women excel in an industry that has been historically dominated by males, and I look forward to reading about successful women photographers every day.
Here at Wonderful Machine, we happily support nearly 150 talented, groundbreaking female photographers. From women who are covering conflict abroad to female adventure photographers who skillfully traverse our home turf, we’re always proud to showcase the work of some of the best women photographers in the industry today. So, to tag along with PDN’s message, today’s post features work from just a few of the female photographers that we’re proud to call members. Enjoy, and be sure to click on their photos to see more of their work!
