When I stumbled upon Gary S. Chapman’s recent project for TOMS, I was immediately curious. More than a few of us here are sporting their undeniably comfy shoes, and I was excited to hear a little more about what the hugely popular brand was up to. TOMS “One for One” motto states, that for each item you purchase they will help someone in need. The way the brand is impacting lives goes beyond shoes, their giving partners help provide a variety of services around the world including: bullying prevention training, eye exams, materials and training for birth attendants and they also support water systems in seven countries. TOMS wanted to have their partners in India photographed for the first time, and with Gary’s passion for humanitarian work, he was the perfect fit for the job. Check out what Gary had to say about the creation of this project in the Q&A.
How did you get involved with TOMS?
I received a call from a producer who said he had seen my work online and really liked it. Of course, when he told me that I’d be covering the work of several of TOMS’ giving partners, I was on-board immediately. The opportunity to document children getting shoes, or women receiving birth kits or those getting vision exams who couldn’t otherwise afford it…it’s all very gratifying.
Were there any challenges involved with this project?
As I start on any trip overseas, I begin thinking about possible challenges that I need to be prepared for: equipment challenges, logistic challenges or people challenges. But this was one assignment that had no hiccups. TOMS’ staff was amazing and well prepared, it was really a pleasure to work with them.
What was involved in planning/preproduction?
I always like planning ahead and thinking through what gear will be most appropriate for each shoot. For this one, the TOMS team wanted me to focus on genuine moments, and not stylized portraits, so I left most of my lighting gear behind. I traveled lighter this time with three camera bodies and six lenses.
What has the reaction to the images been so far?
I’ve only posted a few images from the shoot on my blog and Instagram. My wife, who is also my assistant, had the idea to have our friends post their TOMS shoes while we were on the trip. Friends started posting pictures of their TOMS and others began posting pictures of new TOMS they had just bought because of what they saw on our feed. So, I guess we did our part to spread the word.
Did you learn anything through this project?
I’m always learning and every assignment is a new opportunity to sharpen and expand my skills. For this trip, I shot more than usual. The key to getting genuine emotions that come through a photo is to shoot more, anticipate more. I focused on those two things for this assignment and I think it paid off.
