Buenos Aires-based Javier Pierini takes to the bustling streets of the Argentine capital to give readers a peek into the culture for National Geographic UK. Known as the “Paris of South America,” the grandiose city is buzzing with Porteños — as Buenos Aires’ citizens self-identify — and a growing population of European emigres. Through Javier’s lens, we can view one of Latin America’s most populous cities as a center for commerce, industry, politics, culture, and technology.
Buenos Aires is a huge city, with many interesting spots to photograph. But the city life is what really makes the place different.
Traveling around the globe, while capturing an in-depth look at various cultures and communities is part of Javier’s life and photography style. Following a review of his portfolio, National Geographic UK found Javier’s background in editorial photography a nice fit for this project that took place in his native city.
They liked my photographic style very much, the way I approach to show an intimate point of view of a city.
With wide avenues and a Parisian flair, Buenos Aires is more European than Latin American in character. Known for its renowned architecture, world-class cuisine, vibrant entertainment, shopping, and rich historical sites, the colorful city left ample opportunities for Javier to shoot.
I found this project difficult to close as there will always be some more interesting places to go and see and new people to keep shooting.
The people of Buenos Aires are super friendly and always curious. Art, food, and nightlife are the highlights of the city.
A great destination for those who are drawn to the fast-paced hustle and bustle of a major city, Buenos Aires has a growing population of 3.5 million people. With over 130 museums, diverse neighborhoods and architecture, dozens of parks, world-class shopping, and legendary nightlife this remarkable place truly has something for everyone. Two of the many spectacular sights Javier captured on his tour was an exhibit at Ruth Benzacar, a modern art gallery located in Villa Crespo, and Chuí, one of this year’s most exciting restaurant openings.
It often takes some time until I realize that I have a body of work that reflects the life of a place, it seems that there is always room to keep shooting!
Home to a myriad of ethnic and religious groups, Buenos Aires is known for its eclectic European architecture and rich cultural life. A one of a kind city with seductive energy and tantalizing sights, Buenos Aires has been ranked the “Most Liveable City in Latin America.” Javier’s photojournalistic experience gives readers a sneak peek into the beauty and intrigue of this dynamic culture and lifestyle.
