Appropriately for the new year, The Los Angeles Times paid Kenneth Benjamin Reed of Portland, OR, a nice tribute by including two of his photographs out of the seven featured in their “Best of 2008: Portraits” article:
Benjamin shot the portrait above of recording artist Beck. The photographer says of most shoots:
The odds are against you making a great picture when you photograph a celebrity. You have minutes to make the picture and any preconceived ideas you have could easily fall apart during the shoot. This wasn’t the case with Beck. Beck and I began to collaborate until we had something we both liked; artist and subject contributing to the final piece. I’ve never had an experience quite like that again. It’s now one of my favorite photographs with the Times.
The Times highlighted a second portrait by Reed, the above image of actor Matthew Goode, starring in the upcoming film The Watchmen. Reed said:
We’re often invited to photograph celebrities in the same Beverly Hills rooms throughout the year. As you could imagine, you begin to see the same curtains and wallpaper in your work. I wanted to photograph Matthew Goode in a way not seen before in the hotel so I asked him to stand in the shower and light a cigarette.
