Boston-based Lucie Wicker has established herself as an accomplished fitness and portrait photographer for the last ten years. While she has worked with well-known brands like Puma and New Balance, she actively makes an effort to collaborate with other female small business owners to uplift women in the industry. This is how she met Becky Robinson, founder of the athletic wear brand Bold Body.
We both belong to a networking group called the Women’s Business League, which connects female entrepreneurs who live in the same area.
The two women joined forces to collaborate on a set of images for the brand’s website to showcase the apparel’s ability to accentuate all body types. From poses to the prints to the people themselves, diversity played a big role in shaping the look of Lucie’s images.
The shoot took place at Be Well Studios, a wellness-focused gym and yoga studio located steps from the waterfront on the south shore of Massachusetts. The space was outfitted with large windows, live monstera plants, and stained barn doors, which offered natural light and an organic feel to the athletic imagery.
Most fashion portraiture requires a model to be modest, standing upright and facing forward to showcase the clothing as neutrally as possible. For this shoot, Lucie determined the product would be highlighted better if the audience could see it in action. She directed the models to stretch, sit, dance, and move as they pleased to capture the flexibility of the apparel. Lucie also made sure the models smiled and looked at ease to illustrate comfort. As a result of this dual approach, the imagery depicts a group of women who effortlessly radiate body positivity.
I enjoyed working with such an enthusiastic crew and everyone was so happy with how the images came out. It was a “lovefest!”
Lucie worked with eight different models on set to provide the client with an array of images. Their professions ranged from yoga instructors, dancers, and fitness trainers, and each model highlighted their respective outfits in tandem with their interests. While trying to work with many models in one shoot can be challenging, Lucie couldn’t help but feel that it added to the spirit of the session.
Large groups on set can be challenging but I love the energy they bring, it definitely makes for a fun shoot!
While the photography industry at large encompasses thousands of models, agencies, and photographers, each specialty creates a microcosm where those with shared interests connect. This results in people often working together multiple times. After shooting for a while, Lucie was surprised to realize she had also previously worked with one of the models who was a part of the Boston Cannons Dance Team.
As women establish themselves as business owners and industry leaders, the contacts one meets along the way are an essential foundation for building a network of support. Lucie’s ability to form such relationships, even from a simple conversation at a networking event, speaks to her personal investment in empowering other women. Whether it’s finding a new project or seeing a friendly face, each connection helps to build a community of like-minded people whose skills can aid each other in achieving their individual aspirations.
It’s clear that the work that Lucie and Becky created together speaks to the brand’s motto:
It’s an affirmation for people who are unstoppable, inspirational, and brave. It’s about empowering others to live boldly in everything they do.
