According to Los Angeles-based fine art photographer Manuello Paganelli, “Romania is like a strong old perfume in that when you put it on it won’t let go, while opening your senses to its colorful history, rich culture, friendly faces and all the folks willing to step in and extend a hand.”
Manuello has wanted to travel to Romania since the early 90’s, which he attempted to do but was denied entry. He loves doing black and white, real film reportage work while discovering new places, such as his previous work in Cuba, saying that this work has more meaning and more soul.
These photos certainly have that, getting up close and personal with the people of Romania.
Manuello’s strategy for traveling on his own is always the same:
1. Prepare but always be ready for something going wrong and be calm and thoughtful. When you’re far away, that’s the time to think quick and clearly.
2. I go and arrive with a very positive mind, have fun, shoot plenty and let my eyes observe and capture the moment. And always treat folks all over the world the same way you wish to be treated.
3. If I don’t know the language, I try to learn some basic words and don’t expect other folks to know any of my languages. After all it’s their country. Nobody travels to the USA thinking, “OK they will know my language in North America.” For me, my knowledge in Spanish and Italian helps since the Romania language is one of the Romantic languages.
4. It’s also a great idea to get a legit driver or a guide even if you do rent a car or just take mass transportation. That way, a local will open the door of communication for you in case there is a need and that person will also be an extra set of eyes to see things around you and protect you from any harm.
