This assignment came together maybe a year or two ago when Sue Getzendanner, Dwell‘s photo director, reached out to me. Unfortunately, we missed the weather window that year – the flowers and garden around the house had started to fade for the year. We literally shelved the shoot until next summer, which is when we shot.
The house and its residents live just north of Winnipeg, Manitoba in a community called East St. Paul.
This was during a day and a half I’d say, with the odd prairie thunderstorm thrown in. I really love to spend a lot of time in a place feeling it out, which can sometimes be a little strange to people or residents whom you’ve just met, but that’s my vibe. I need to see how people move through a space and how they fit into it, how they occupy it. I think that architecture photography of this style, which feels a little bit more alive, is really also about exclusion. Not everything needs to be photographed or seen, and a bit of abstraction of events or places or scenes within the house is ok. We typically shot outdoors until the weather rolled in or we lost the light and then transitioned indoors after that.
