I have always had a vivid imagination and restless spirit. Growing up, I resisted routine. I dreamt in moving and still images. I imagined the light that burns inside people shining outward, giving colour to space and objects, spreading like long fingers over my community to move life like a musician makes music. The things I imagined told the story of my life and all its contradictions; more than anything, I wanted to capture that life. Soon, I discovered photography and the means of capturing it was in my hands. The beauty in the everyday existence of ordinary people that I once imagined became the subject of my art, through which I capture images focusing on the human face and its unique ability to convey a person’s spirit. There is nothing else like it. My photographs are thus inspired by the ineffable and under-appreciated quality of the human face as unlike anything else in existence. It is, on one level, as profane as any body part, made of flesh and common enough among people; and yet our faces are unmatched in their abilities to reveal, if even fleetingly, something divine. Through portraiture – indeed, the photographic study of the face – my work emphasizes that which reveals us and conceals us, defines and perplexes us, moves and stupefies us, eludes and demands knowing. My portraits depict the intersectionality of the human face as a liminal subject joining the sacred and profane.

Based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai based professional photographer / videographer with more than 10 years of experience, I began my career as a graphic designer. However, my passion for lights, shades and colors led to me morphing into a photographer.
Light is something that has always fascinated me. The same location seen at different times under different light conditions leaves the photographer in me amazed. Most of my photography inspirations are from cinema; cinematographer Roger Deakins is my all time favorite. Some day I hope to possess a portfolio – and a professional attitude – similar to that great man!
Over the last 8 years in the UAE, I’ve contributed my photography skills to magazines such as BBC Good Food, CitizenK, WatchTime, InsideOut, Friday, Gulf News and Fatfeat, to name a few.
I love meeting and interacting with people every day… some of them I take along in this journey called life.

Hi, I’m John. I am a commercial and editorial photographer specializing in lifestyle, fashion, and beauty imagery. I enjoy telling stories with pictures of people. I grew up on the banks of the Tennessee River, in an area of northern Alabama best known for its legendary recording studios and its ample fresh water. The grandson of a boat builder, I spent most of my childhood splashing around in the latter. My love for being in, on, and near the water continues to this day and has led me to the shores of South Florida, where I live with my wife, Erin, and our daughter, Emilia. (You may even see water make an appearance in my work from time to time.) I picked up the camera professionally in 2009 and have not looked back. When not working on a project, I can be found scribbling in my notebook, playing guitar for an audience of two, debating the intricacies of life with a toddler, or predictably, somewhere near the water.

I was born and reside in Colorado and also lived in New Mexico and Texas. I take frequent road trips throughout the West and often get lost in the mountains. When not shooting photos, I’m usually drinking coffee or entertaining my little guy, Levi. I make a mean carnitas and tequila is my drink, preferably añejo. I buy too many photo books. My latest purchase and current favorite is George Georgio’s American Parade.
I speak English, Spanish and I’m learning Italian. I have to; my wife grew up in Sicily. I eat a lot of cannoli.
Give me a call. Let’s grab an americano, high five, and better yet, work together.
