Photographer/director Clark Vandergrift has an especially strong connection to the health professionals defending us against the coronavirus: his wife is one of them. So when the pandemic began and his wife’s profession took on a new sense of urgency and danger, he witnessed the way this was affecting his family and sought a means to document it.
Last spring, IMRE Baltimore asked photographer Clark Vandergrift to submit an estimate to shoot a new campaign for their client, Kwikset Residential Door Hardware. Clark brought me in to help determine and negotiate licensing fees and fine-tune the production expenses he had come up with. After a somewhat lengthy negotiation, with numerous rounds of revisions, Clark was awarded the job and hired me to produce the campaign.
The US capital could accommodate a plethora of delightful scenarios for both residents and tourists, all of it captured beautifully by lifestyle photographers in Washington, DC.
Self-assigned projects don’t have to just be timely to get picked up by well-known publications and other big-name outlets. A polished project can get the attention of any busy editor.
Whether descriptive prose for a blog, pithy captions for your social media feeds, a thoughtful plan voiced in a creative call, or the precise language of a licensing agreement, knowing how to put two words together is often what separates good business-people from merely good picture-takers.
During the month of May Wonderful Machine’s site saw modest increases in users both in relation to April 2020 and May 2019, although pageviews and sessions decreased. In short, it’s a mixed bag.
