Earlier this month, ASMP’s Chief Legal Officer Tom Maddrey hosted a two-day workshop on writing and evaluating Contracts, Releases, and Licenses, tailored specifically for photographers and visual creators.
Tom kicked off the workshop by exploring the fundamental building blocks of every contract. He focused on identifying and understanding the critical components that constitute a solid contract, as well as key red flags to watch out for when presented with a contract from a client. Tom outlined techniques for drafting contracts that are clear, concise, and legally sound. He also covered talent and property releases.
The second day of the workshop featured a session with Wonderful Machine Executive Producer Bryan Sheffield. Bryan provided real-world applications and evaluations, offering practical insights into crafting fair and high-quality estimates, proposals, licenses, and agreements with real-world examples from past projects. Tom weighed in with his own notes and recommendations alongside Bryan.
Overall, the workshop helped equip attendees with skills and insight to proficiently draft effective contracts, negotiate terms with confidence, protect their interests, and foster successful client relationships.
