As part of our Marketing Mentor service, I worked with Arlington, Massachusetts-based photographer Julianne Snow Gauron first for three months in the summer of 2023, and then again most recently in early 2024.
At the start of the mentorship, we reviewed Julianne’s website, and I made some suggestions. That summer, she went on an artist residency at Kent Island Research Station. Luckily, we were able to continue our calls and edit her images while she was there. This gave me the opportunity to guide Julianne on what was missing or any areas she needed to focus on. When Julianne finished her residency, she had a lovely project for us to market. We worked on a digital promo together and I helped research publications that might be interested in the project. We focused on US and Canadian news publications as well as Bird magazines. Julianne has had interest from two publications that she is still considering.
Later in 2023, Julianne traveled to Mongolia with a non-profit organization to work on another project. Once again, she returned with a beautiful and interesting environmental story that we could work on together. We did a large edit of the project, created a digital promo, and brainstormed a list of publications that might be interested in it.
Julianne expressed early on that her passion is working with non-profits and NGOs. I was able to build a strong list of contacts for every organization we could think of. We framed her website towards this type of work. After all her marketing efforts, Julianne just received an assignment with a US organization to work on a project in Uganda and Mozambique on women in agriculture. I am so proud of her.
I love working with Julianne. She is great at brainstorming, coming up with story ideas, and then researching that potential project. Not only is she bright and hardworking, but she is also organized and follows up with clients regularly. Julianne understands that you must hustle in this industry, and she really does.
Julianne is new to the industry, and it takes time to create strong content, let people know who you are, and be patient. However, she is talented, understands the business, and loves to research and pitch ideas. I know her patience will pay off!
It has been a pleasure working with Gina Martin. She has assisted me by reviewing edits from ongoing projects, and culling them down to tight stories. Gina has also helped at the other end of the spectrum in the process of marketing my stories out to possible clients, both publications and non-profit organizations. The breadth of her knowledge of the industry has been a huge help to me at this stage of my career.
