The online-based F8 Magazine recently published its new issue. Like previous issues, we were able to promote our website in a nice ad right across from their editor’s note.
This time around we used an image by Boston-based photographer, Carl Tremblay. Repped by Paula Gren Reps, Carl shoots various great works from conceptual to corporate. We selected his image of a young professional sitting on a bed of nails to illustrate a metaphor for our promotional services. I got Carl to give me a bit of back story to the shoot and his concept behind it:
The bed of nails was the inspiration for this shot. I first saw it amongst the props at Associated Quirks, a prop house run by perhaps one of the first prop stylist in Boston, Mary Quirk. It was in my head for a while, perhaps a year before the right location and idea took shape. The obvious idea of a Fakir in traditional attire siting atop the bed of nails came to mind, but I felt it was expected. On a scout for another project, I came across this office and the bed of nails idea came to mind to create a modern day “quiet room”. A place where one could escape to relax and forget about it all. I cast talent, got in touch with Mary, and worked with a wardrobe stylist to create the final shot. The talent was great and produced the perfect look of contentment and relaxation. The nails were seven inches tall and very sharp! It was quite a task to slowly sit down–even with a small piece of foam core to protect the relaxing sitter. We eventually had to turn the piece of foam core over since the nails were poking through. Nobody was injured thankfully, we laughed and had a great morning.
Also featured in the magazine is Los Angeles-based custom big rig photographer and aficionado Roger Snider who got a lengthy 11-page feature. The article showcases a good variety of his work, from brawny American Peterbilt’s to flashy Japanese Dekotora trucks.
