Rhode Island-based sports and portrait photographer Jason Evans recently worked with us on a Branding and Marketing Plan, after which he began diligently following our recommendations, including a fresh web edit. Jason has years of success shooting major sports events (does it get more major than the Olympics?), as well as editorial and corporate portraits, but decided he wanted to pursue advertising clients more.
Our web edits usually start with the photographer sending us about 500 pictures to work from. That might seem like a lot, but we’ve found that it gives us an opportunity to really understand that photographer, and it often lets us consider pictures that the photographer themselves might overlook. After all, it’s an almost universal truth that photographers tend not to be the best editors of their own work. Photographers often see connections between pictures that nobody else sees, and at the same time, they can be blind to relationships between pictures that a good photo editor can reveal.
Jason’s initial batch of 500 pictures turned out to be a treasure trove of images, and we were thrilled to start piecing together an edit that would portray them in their best light, as well as meet our strategic objectives. Our main goal with this edit was to emphasize pictures with advertising appeal. The difference between an editorial vs. an advertising approach to photography is that the intent of an editorial photographer is to portray the particular reality of a situation. A good advertising photograph, however, is more about finding an upbeat universality that transcends that particular person or situation, so that it can be used to help sell a product. Luckily for us, Jason’s photographs naturally tend toward that upbeat universality, so it was mostly a matter of accentuating that in the edit and finding smooth segues between pictures.
It’s not hard to imagine this portrait of a shipbuilder being used to sell investment products or pharmaceuticals:
And even though this picture was shot during an actual event, clients will immediately appreciate the advertising appeal of the graphic image of a heroic athlete (not to mention that the outfit looks great too!)
After a couple of rounds of revisions, Jason was very excited to implement the changes and push his new look to potential clients.
