Like a lot of creatives out there, I’ve been making art since I was just a kid, drawing endless amounts of super heroes, pirate ships and treasure maps in my room. Now, I can’t say I drew on my parents wall as a child, but as a fellow artist, I wholeheartedly support creativity (no matter the outlet), so along with the rest of the Wonderful Machine team, I chose to support this kid’s creative side in our August print mailer. Printed by Modern Postcard and mailed out to 2,963 creatives across the US and Canada, our promo pays homage to that young, creative spirit inside us all. Finland-based photographer Aki-Pekka Sinikoski shot this month’s image for our viewing pleasure and was also nice enough to fill me in on the concept behind the shoot:
I’m often asked to shoot assignments where clients want photos that have a mix of advertising and documentary styles. This image was part of a campaign I shot for Helsingin Sanomat, the largest subscription newspaper in Finland and the Nordic countries. The campaign included more than twenty photos telling small stories of everyday life in Finland.
With this series I was heavily involved in creating the image concepts in cooperation with the advertising agency, Family Inc. And to be honest, this campaign was pretty special because I did the model and location scouting myself. I chose to work this way so I could get as authentic as possible results. For the same reason, I chose to work with non-professional models. Granted, it takes more effort to direct non-professional models, but you often get better results, as was the case with this campaign.
