The director of integrated production at ZuluAlphaKilo recently came to us for help finding an unusual stock photo for their client, Subaru of Canada. They were looking for “thumb stopping” images of cherry blossoms (also known as Sakura) in Canada and Japan. The primary use of the images would be on social media to promote a contest where the winner would win a trip to visit the Cherry Blossoms. Here’s their creative brief:
Harnessing our extensive network of photographers, we built a list of 971 photographers based in Canada and Japan who we sent the Stock Request to. Here’s the request we sent out:
We received 330 submissions from 23 photographers, depicting beautiful landscapes of cherry blossoms in both locations. Ultimately, the folks at Subaru decided on an image from Vancouver-based Tal Vardi. The image features a father and child riding a bike across a Sakura tree-lined street in front of a snow-capped mountainscape.
We negotiated the licensing fee and terms, and a few months later, we were able to track down the final use online.
