Photographer Mattia Balsamini is based in Venice, Italy, but recently traveled between the USA, Russia, and Germany to photograph the German astronaut Alexander Gerst in preparation for his mission to the International Space Station for GEO Magazine.
We travelled first to NASA Johnson Space Center to witness the first part of the training, then to Star City in Russia (an ESA facility) and then to Germany at Airbus, as the company developed Cimon, an artificial intelligence device that will accompany the astronauts in this mission.
