Peter Taylor contacted us ready for a big change. He felt that he’d been putting off updating his site and book because he just didn’t know what to include anymore. Peter shoots a broad range of subject matter, but in everything he does, he aims for authenticity. He felt that his current website no longer reflected his direction and style. With hopes to attract more national editorial and commercial work, he wanted to show a style that felt honest without coming off as documentary.
With a better understanding of what Peter was looking for, we started out reviewing his images. The more we explored Peter’s work, the more we felt he was very much a food photographer. His recent work revolves around restaurants, farmers, hunters, and of course, plated food. He hadn’t really seen his work in that way before but was happy to know that his brand had become more consolidated than he had realized.
We decided to open the site with a category of his more general food photographs: plates, dining spaces, and chefs hard at work. Next, we featured images from Peter’s ongoing project, photographing producers of high-quality ingredients throughout the South, entitled “Purveyors.” Hunters seemed a logical followup to farmers, so we created a third gallery of sportsmen, which bridges the gap between food and outdoor/adventure photography. And last but not least, we edited a section of more general portraits that were not as centered on food, but still spoke to other segments of Peter’s potential clients.
After the website was complete, Peter was ready to move on to a book edit. We spent a bit of time researching vendors for a unique print portfolio binding. After some brainstorming on something unique that spoke to his brand, we referred Peter to Infused Motif, a business we found on Etsy. They create custom wooden books, which Peter agreed nicely complimented his imagery. After the binding was selected, Peter did his printing in-house and when it was completed, shipped us a copy to keep on hand.
