TIME and ASMP teamed up last September to create The Human Element: A Global Photographic Portraiture Competition. The photo contest was open worldwide to participants over the age of 18, and aimed to highlight the diverse spectrum of portraiture. It was juried by TIME Deputy Director of Photography Dilys Ng, TIME Photo Editor Sangsuk Sylvia Kang, Photoville Co-Founder Laura Roumanos, and photographer Martin Schoeller.
Over 2,200 images were submitted across five categories from photographers worldwide. The winning submissions (announced in January) represent photographers from the US, the UK, Germany, Poland, Bangladesh, Iran, China, Italy, and the Netherlands.
There were over $16,000 in cash prizes awarded, with other prizes including a paid photo assignment for TIME, a custom three-month mentorship with the photo editors of TIME, and a lifetime complimentary membership in ASMP.
