Emailer: A Sophisticated Layout for Katie Newburn’s Vertical Photos

BY Christine Hughes 19 June 2019
Intel, Case Studies, Design, Emailer Template

Katie Newburn is a lifestyle and food photographer based in Portland, Oregon. Her photos have a modern look with vibrant colors — a style that lines up beautifully with her overall brand. With her new photography business growing steadily, Katie decided it was time to dive into email marketing. And although she was familiar with email service providers like Emma and MailChimp, she hadn’t ever found a stock template that she liked. So she decided to reach out to Wonderful Machine to help her customize a template to matches her unique style.

Katie hoped to send the email as a bi-monthly newsletter, with a bit of descriptive text and her photos prominently displayed. So, with that in mind, we began the first round of design.

First Round

The first round designs for Katie Newburn's emailer.

The first iteration consisted of a horizontal lead image, supporting vertical photos, and small graphical elements and body copy. Katie reviewed the first round and gave great feedback. Since most of her photos are vertical, she wanted to try a jigsaw (uneven) layout to see if it would work.

Second Round

The second round of designs for Katie Newburn's emailer.

For this round, we focused on the bottom gallery, allowing the vertical photos to cascade down the page like a waterfall. After receiving Katie’s approval, we combined the last two iterations into a final design.

We used a vertical lead image, which made a stunning impact on the final design. The jigsaw gallery displayed Katie’s photos beautifully and was easy to develop in MailChimp.

Katie’s email template will make it easy for her to drop in new photos and text each time she’s ready to send out a new campaign – so she can show clients what she is really capable of.
